Southwestern PA Partnership for Aging’s  (SWPPA)  Annual Legislative Lunch @ IUP

Superior Home Care

At Superior, advocacy around the issues that impact home care and the work we do is always a top priority for Executive Director Kim Pirilla-Scalise.  Kim is deeply involved with advocacy across the state thru her work with various Policy & Advocacy committees.

Kim is the Co-Chair of Southwestern PA Partnership for Aging’s Policy & Advocacy Committee.  Each year SWPPA hosts a legislative event to present its policy priorities for the year, inviting open discussion between stakeholders and our elected officials and DHS department heads around the priorities.  This year’s event was held on the beautiful campus of IUP on 4/24/26, the event was once again a wonderful opportunity to share, learn and network.

This event always spurs new thinking, connections, insight and dialogue around ways we can make thriving in PA as we age possible!

Superior boldly begins to integrate AI into its operations!

In April we officially began integrating AI into our day to day operations by incorporating an AI-scheduling assistant application thru one of our existing vendor partnerships (Zingage). This application is directly integrated into our Wellsky EMR and literally “reads” our data to handle each call that we receive.

Anna is the name we’ve given our scheduling assistant, and by this point most of our staff have had at least one call or text from “her”. Every call that comes into our office through our main line or our staffing coordinator’s direct line, is now routed through Anna. Anna triages each call to determine if “she” can and should handle the call or if the call should be escalated to a real person on our team.

It is important to note that we configured which calls Anna can handle and which should be escalating, and we expect we will continue to refine this as we use Anna. The configuration is based on the issues we feel need a human touch and are not easily automated.

The goal is to have Anna handle the many quick, easily automated calls as they come in so our staffing coordinator can give focused time and attention to the more complex calls and in building more meaningful connection with our caregivers and clients.

A caller can still request that a message be delivered to anyone on our team or directly call into an admin team member on their direct phone line.

There are multiple reasons we decided to implement this new AI tool, and they all are about sustainability in a continually difficult care environment. Here are a few of those reasons, and we are already seeing positive improvement across each:

  • Seamless monitoring of our schedule for compliance, which has become increasingly more of a focus with all of our payers.
Ability to handle multiple calls in/out simultaneously from caregivers, clients and referral sources. No caller will ever again have to leave a message and wait for a return call.
  • Completely accurate documentation of every call and issue handled. Anna not only records every interaction but also translates the information into a concise, time and date stamped note in each client/caregiver record. No more worries over missing documentation.
  • Reduced staffing coordinator burn out – Anna takes an important load off of this critical role, allowing this team member to spend more time doing the aspects of the job that are most rewarding.

It’s only our first month with Anna – we all are learning how to continually refine this tool and leverage it to help us do what we do, even better.

Caregiver Shout Outs!

  • Stephanie Taylor – Shout Out! for jumping in with only a day’s notice to help us cover an emergency respite case – working two 24-hour shifts in a row. What relief this brought to a family in crisis. Thank you, Stephanie!
  • Brianna Hollingsworth – Shout Out! for also jumping in to cover a shift with the same family who needed respite. What peace of mind they had because of you!
  • Nizhaya Battle – Shout Out! to you, for stepping right in to serve a client in a hard to staff location who had been waiting for the right caregiver. The family called after your first week to say what a lifesaver you are to them. Thank you, Nizhaya!
  • Penny Carter-Smith – Shout Out! to you for raising such a fine, amazing young woman! Penny’s daughter was nominated as the President of the National Association of Black Accountants for Penn State. What a proud mama Penny is!

Let’s have some FUN!!

We’re going to have some fun with this May issue – part of our 25th Year celebration!

The first 5 caregivers who answer this question via email to Kim at kim@superiorinhome.com will win 500 Zingage points.

Here is your question:

Who is our Operations Manager?

The Best Side Hustle Out There!

Are you looking for a way to earn some extra money AND help us reach more clients in need of care?

Well look no further! Our Employee Referral Program could put as much as $450 in your pocket every month.

That’s right – $450! Refer just 3 people who are hired and work at least 90 days, and you could $450 ($150 per referral).

And even better, on each referred person’s anniversary date with us for as long as they work with us – you get another $25. If you’ve referred 6 people in the year and they all stay for a year, that’s another $150.

Great caregivers are all around you – in your neighborhood, apartment building, at your child’s school or on their sports team, at church – even your own family members may be a great fit for us. Simply spread the word that we are hiring, and send them to us. You also can add anyone you recommend right in Zingage and we’ll reach out directly.

Here are areas we are currently looking for caregivers in:

  • East Pittsburgh
  • Millvale/Aspinwall
  • Hazelwood/Homestead
  • Monroeville
